Visit to Waihi Beach Airstrip NZWV

Last week,I decided to drop into Waihi Beach airstrip some 45 minute drive North of Tauranga to see if anything was around after the airfield was closed for a while during the year for ground improvments to the runway and surrounding area.

There is only 1 main hangar onsite which i believe holds 3 or 4 resident aircraft but across the road from the strip is a very popular Cafe/Restaurant .From inspection of the hangar i could see 3 residents.
ZK-CSC Sports cruiser and ZK-JAN Tecnam P96 Golf plus one unidentified aircraft minus its prop.

The main radio frequency for Waihi is 124.50 and runway patten of 33 R/H and 13 LH

Seen parked up was Cessna 185 ZK-CHL which traveled up from Dannervirke

Looking down the main grass 31 RWY  Right Hand

The airstrips only hangar which stands just to the left side of 33 R/H

Looking down from the car park of the cafe of the 640m runway.I hope one day with the owners permission ,to organize a fly-in here with help from others to see not just 1 but 50 plus visiting.Dreams are free !!!!!!

Already Waihi has had some more recent visitors in December as the BOP revels in sunshine and here are a few noted

The airstrip at WV is SO MUCH BETTER than it was a year ago. The area in front of the hangar and to the south eastern threshold has been raised by nearly a metre and, with improved drainage, has gotten rid of the wet area that kept WV closed for periods in previous winters. The rest of the airstrip, heading down 31 has also been raised with a wider landing surface and a more gentle crown, giving pilots a wider area in a cross wind and less pull to one side or the other.
